Campaign trail update!

Somehow I managed to place sixth (and last) on the ballot paper.

The draw took place in the Australian Electoral Commission office at midday on Friday – the ALP bloke nabbed top spot. Last is not great but I’m assured it’s better than being lost in the middle – the big job now is to remind everyone they must vote carefully and number every box (preferably starting at the bottom)!

On the subject of hitting sixes, the Steve Waugh piece, ‘Captain’s Knock’ is now up for auction. It's been donated by John’s lovely cousin Faith. I know a couple of ‘cricket tragics’ who would probably love to make a bid, but I’m not convinced John Howard’s that interested in my success! Anyway, go crazy with Steve Waugh. See the details here.

We’ve had a busy weekend, the beaut ute is all signed up. John and I headed for Maleny at 5.30am Saturday to meet the passing parade outside Maleny News. It was a great morning (thanks to Matt and Denise for making us so welcome).

From there, we hung out in Landsborough for a while (got Pat and Andy up a tree posting signs) and then headed for Beerwah. Steve and the team at Beerwah Meats have been great supporters – and just for the record, they make a fine rissole too.

The office at 111 Bulcock Street is looking just like a bought one and Alison is working full time now. Her big job is securing ‘booth captains’ and their teams for election day. If you've registered at the website, you'll get an email shortly. (Log on here if you''d like to be part of the fun).

Thank you so much. I hope handing out ‘how to votes’ is a new and interesting experience for everyone involved (and we’re planning a great party on the night). But I know your time is precious and I can’t tell you how grateful I am that so many of you would sacrifice some of it for me.

Also this week, I recorded some TV ads with my beautiful friend Leigh Hubner (better known as Cruiser Boy) from Loose Cannon Productions. Not sure the little suckers will get to air yet (don’t start me on the cost of TV advertising) but if we can't score the budget for them, they'll at least end up on YouTube. (Kevin Rudd and I are so cool).

Other than that – I need to get some signs happening. Anyone who knows anyone with a house in a good spot, who wouldn’t mind my head in their front yard – I’d love to know about them. Right now, Peter Slipper looks like the most popular bloke on the Nicklin Way and we can’t have that! Email Alison at the Campaign Office.

Last but not least, my tip for The Melbourne Cup? Damian Oliver on Purple Moon. Surely HE can do better than sixth!

PS There's another Meet the Candidates for Fisher session, this Saturday (Nov 10) at Lake
Community Centre Kawana. Refreshments from 8.30am. Wrestling between 9 and 11. This is a joint initiative of Association of Independent Retirees and the Australian Pensioners and Superannuants League (which is pretty much special code for the Liberal Party - so if you want to come along and support the underdog - I'd SOOOOO love to see you there).

Peter Andren

Is it just me or does everyone sometimes wonder what fate is thinking?

Anyone who has been on this site before will know that I am standing as an Independent for the Federal seat of Fisher.

Yesterday, one of my heroes died.

Peter Andren, a former school teacher and news reader, was the Independent member for the federal seat of Calare (country NSW).

He won Calare in 1996 and at every election he increased his majority. By 2001 he had made the seat so safe he didn't even need preferences to be re-elected.

He was exactly the type of politician I want to be.

His close friend and fellow independent Tony Windsor described Mr Andren as the conscience of parliament.

Like me, Mr Andren was a vocal critic of many of the government's policies, including the Telstra sale, the treatment of refugees and Australia's involvement in the war in Iraq.

But his real passion was for the people of his electorate. He was decent and principled and his battle with pancreatic cancer lasted just 115 days.

Rest in peace Peter Andren, you did a really good job.
